Here, you’ll be captivated by panoramic views over Amman’s historic heart and the surrounding landscape. Explore ancient ruins left by the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, including the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. Then, descend into Amman’s vibrant downtown, or “Al Balad,” where bustling markets, historical sites, and local eateries fill the narrow streets. A stroll along Rainbow Street offers a glimpse of modern Amman, with colourful street art, lively cafes, and galleries. Enjoy a street food lunch for a true taste of local flavour, and complete the day with dinner in a popular downtown restaurant. Overnight in Amman.
Day 3 – Jerash, Ajloun, and Umm Qays
Today, venture north to Jerash, a remarkably preserved Roman city whose paved streets, towering columns, and grand temples reveal the splendour of Roman civilisation. Wander through the Oval Plaza and admire the well-kept arches, theatres, and collonaded streets that make Jerash one of the region’s top archaeological sites. Continue to Ajloun Castle, a medieval stronghold perched on a hilltop, built to defend the area from Crusader attacks. Here, take in the impressive architecture and sweeping views of the surrounding pine forests. Conclude the day in the charming town of Umm Qays, perched high above the Jordan Valley and Sea of Galilee, with views stretching across to Israel and Syria. Enjoy an authentic dinner with a local family, experiencing Jordanian hospitality firsthand before an overnight stay in Umm Qays.
Day 4 – Pella, Bethany, and Madaba
Your journey today begins at Pella, an archaeological gem with layers of history from the Chalcolithic period to the Roman era. Stroll among ancient ruins, including a Roman Odeon and remains of Byzantine churches. Next, head to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, believed to be the site where John the Baptist baptised Jesus, a place that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. Continue to Madaba, famously known as the “City of Mosaics.” Explore the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, where the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land is displayed on the floor. This vibrant depiction in stone brings the geography of ancient times to life. In the evening, dine at a heritage house in Madaba, savouring traditional dishes in a beautifully restored setting. Overnight in Madaba.
Day 5 – Madaba to Dana
Discover Madaba’s rich history before journeying along the historic King’s Highway to Mount Nebo, the site where Moses is believed to have viewed the Promised Land. Stand atop this revered mountain and take in the views over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and on a clear day, Jerusalem. Travel onward to the Crusader Castle of Kerak, a formidable fortress that has withstood sieges for centuries. Wander its immense stone corridors and underground passages, imagining the intense battles once fought here. From Kerak, continue to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan’s largest nature reserve, known for its stunning biodiversity and awe-inspiring landscapes. Here, settle into your eco-lodge, surrounded by majestic cliffs and valleys. Overnight in Dana.
Day 6 – Dana and Shaq al Reesh Trail
Embark on an invigorating hike along the Shaq al Reesh Trail, a stunning route through Dana’s dramatic sandstone canyons. This moderate to challenging trail rewards hikers with breathtaking views of Dana’s rugged terrain, with striking rock formations and rare plant species dotting the landscape. After the hike, travel to Beidha, also known as Little Petra, an archaeological site that transports visitors back 10,000 years to the final phase of the Stone Age. Wander through this ancient village, observing the remains of early farming settlements and structures that provide a unique glimpse into the lives of Jordan’s first settlers. Spend the evening in a luxurious camp near Beidha, surrounded by Petra’s captivating landscapes.
Day 7 – The Monastery and Petra
Begin the day exploring Petra’s back trail from Little Petra, following a picturesque mountain route to the Monastery (Ad Deir). This massive, iconic monument, carved directly into the rose-red cliffs, stands as one of Petra’s most striking structures. Continue through Petra’s expansive archaeological site, weaving through temples, tombs, and narrow passageways leading to the city centre. The day concludes with a scenic walk through the Siq, Petra’s famous narrow gorge flanked by towering sandstone walls, culminating at the Treasury, a sight that leaves travellers spellbound. In the evening, journey to Wadi Rum and settle into the Martian Desert Camp for an enchanting night under the stars.
